Today we explore the root lie of all lies. In 2 Peter 1:3 the great apostle states that we have everything we need for life and godliness. Do you believe that? In the midst of calamity and crisis, is that faith shaken? The truth is that this is the root of our faith.
When the serpent, the Devil, deceived Adam and Eve in the garden, that was what he attacked. He questioned the truth that Adam and Eve were created in the image of God. Read this sad tale again:
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”Gen 3:1-5
The enemy convinced Adam and Eve that they were not created in the image of God, and that God was somehow holding back something good from them. They believed the lie that they did not have everything they need.
We will follow Peter’s admonition to “make ever effort to add to your faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love.” But we must add these things to the root faith and belief that God has created us in his image, and he intends good purposes for us. God is not holding back anything from you. Not now and not ever. God is good.
Let’s press on to make our calling and election sure.
