Thirty years ago this summer, Mary & I quickly purchased tickets to the Philippines and Hong Kong. We were suddenly responsible for YWAM’s Field Ministry Internships program, college teams that were serving in three countries that summer.

We had just started a new student ministry in Tampa when I got the call in April from Chuck Ellis in Hawai’i. Mary and I fasted and prayed with our team in Florida. We got the “go!” So we packed a few suitcases and flew to take this new assignment in Kona, Hawai’i in May. After a few days learning the ropes, we welcomed undergrads from a dozen colleges for a ten day orientation before putting them on flights to Belize, Hong Kong, and the Philippines.

Mary and I flew to meet the teams and leaders doing social work, education, health care, and a business start-up at Smokey Mountain garbage dump in Manila. The journalism team wrote about Hong Kong’s soon transition from British to Chinese control, and that story is still relevant today. Our Belize team joined the other teams at the end of the summer in L.A. for a week of debriefing. Are you ready to go?

“If I wrote any more on this relief offering for the poor Christians, I’d be repeating myself. I know you’re on board and ready to go. I’ve been bragging about you all through Macedonia province, telling them, “Achaia province has been ready to go on this since last year.” Your enthusiasm by now has spread to most of them.”
